In view of ongoing festive season and to review the preparedness of North-West District in case of any terrorist attack & quick reaction of ‘Bomb Disposal Team’, a mock drill was conducted near Apollo Pharmacy, Model Town-II, Delhi, under the close supervision of Ms. Usha Rangnani, DCP/North-West.
During this exercise, a PCR call regarding an unattended tiffin box with electric wires lying over it, near Apollo Pharmacy, Model Town-II, Delhi was made at 13.17 Hrs. Immediately, Police vans reached at the spot at 13.20 Hrs (i.e within 03 minutes). Subsequently, ACP/Model Town & SHO/Model Town alongwith local PS staff with proper arms and ammunition reached at the spot.
The PCR call was confirmed and seniors were immediately communicated. DCP/North-West Ms. Usha Rangnani alongwith Addl. DCsP reached at the spot and ACP/Ops along with ACP/ Ashok Vihar from adjacent subdivision were called at the spot. Subsequently, reserve staff along with Bomb disposal Team, and Dog Squad were mobilized to the spot with proper arms and ammunition.
After which, DCP/North-West initiated the operation to neutralize the tiffin box suspected to be bomb. The suspicious Tiffin was surrounded by sand bags to mitigate the potential threat and the area was cordoned off in two layers, first layer upto 50 Mts and second layer upto 100 Mts and information was shared with other teams including ambulance, fire and traffic department. The area was cordoned off and shops in the vicinity were closed and public was evacuated from the surroundings and thereafter secured the perimeter upto 200 mtr. Information was shared with other teams including ambulance & fire department. ACP/Operations and his teams were tasked to analyse CCTVs nearby and to gather intelligence.
Thereafter, Bomb Disposal Squad, Dog Squad, Traffic Team, Quick Response Teams of North-West District, CATS Ambulance & fire engines reached at the spot. Traffic was managed in all the artillary roads. Bomb Disposal Team examined the suspicious Tiffin Box with the help of Bomb Detector and Dog Squad also examined it. Nothing suspicious could be detected inside the Tiffin Box. Also, nothing suspicious could be found by teams of ACP/Operations. The tiffin box was then opened, taking due care and attention, by Bomb Disposal Squad team and some wires and nails were found in it. SHOs/ATOs of the all the police stations of the district were alerted and markets in the area were checked.

The above said operation was handled smoothly and without any hindrance. Due to swift action and use of fine skills by police personnel, public stampede was also prevented. The situation was found under control. Bomb Disposal Squad, Dog Squad, Ambulance, Fire Engines & Quick Response Teams of North-West District were redirected to their respective stations. The mock drill was successfully completed at 13.45 Hrs. While mock drill was ongoing, alert was communicated in the district and directions were given to all ACPs and SHOs in the district to do vigilant checking in their high footfall area like markets and vital installation.All Insp/Investigation & ATOs were further directed to enhance patrolling in the area and keep a close vigil over anything suspicious.
Usha Rangnani, DCP/North-West, addressed the public regarding mock drill exercise after its completion and all were sensitized to remain vigilant regarding anti-terror measures at public places and motivated them to be ‘Eyes & Ears’ of Delhi Police & to inform police regarding anything suspicious noticed by them. Also the staff was detailed and debriefing of the staff was done while emphasizing the need to quick response and following of proper protocols.
